I am Tiina Kuokkanen, a historical archaeologist, a historian and a teacher. I first got involved with history when I started studying archaeology at the University of Oulu in 2000. I received my master’s degree in archaeology in 2006 and in history in 2014. In my historical archaeological PhD thesis, I studied people, their clothing and identity and the town community in early modern Oulu.
I am working on the Warjakan Tarinat project during this Summer. I am trying to find as much information as possible about the houses and residents of Kukonkatu and Finninkatu in Varjakka. I’m especially interested in two houses whose foundations are planned to be used in the Warjakka 3D augmented reality exhibition. My main source material comprises of documents in the Varjakka sawmill archive. This study is as interesting as it is challenging, for only the stone bases of the houses remain to this day.
