Saturday 7th September and Sunday 8th September – 14:00-16:00. Oulu Museum of Art – Satula Room. Free. Part of Oulu Days.
Mycelial Threads: Drawn Together is a performance installation taking place in Finland and Germany simultaneously. Performed by Tanja Råman in Oulu and Stephanie Felber in Munich, the work has emerged from a 3-year research project that is a fusion of art, sound, technology and performance that connects people across borders. Inspired by the naturally interconnected systems found in the forest, two artists collaborate on a drawing that spirals off the page and into a dance.
The studios in Oulu and Munich are both set up identically with a chair, a table and a flipchart pad, one black pen, one red pen. Using a system of cameras and projectors, the performers can work together on the same drawing, and dance together as if in the same room.
The performance consists of a series of 20-minute loops, each time starting at the table and then moving off into the room. Drawing and movement is improvised and unique during each loop – the structure is contained within the soundtrack. At the end of each loop, the top layer of paper is removed and pinned up on display. Audience members are free to enter and exit throughout the 2-hour duration, and stay for as many loops as they wish.
