TaikaBox’s rural residency programme takes a step up this year, becoming part of the Tiny Spaces Deep Connections residency project. Along with Inwole in Potsdam and Communitism in Athens, we have been devising new methods for more sustainable artist residencies.

This residency project is special in a number of ways:

  • The three organisations offer residencies in recycled and reclaimed spaces.
  • Artists travel slowly – by train, bus and ferry, using the cabins and carriages as work spaces.
  • Their journeys are curated to include stopovers with like-minded organisations.
  • The work produced is process-led, responding to – and involving – local communities and spaces.
  • A digital twin of the Tiny Spaces provides universal access to events and archive of the residencies.
  • The findings of the project become the subject of a symposium on a boat as part of Oulu2026.

The artists for Summer 2025 were chosen through an open call process which received almost 400 applications. TaikaBox will be hosting two artists in June/July in KALAMAJA – our fishing shed art space by the sea in Varjakka. In June, we welcome Andrea Hackl, and in July we will be working with Afraz Entessari.
